Synopsis

In summer, Porto Pino's snow-white sand dune is lined with brightly coloured beach bars and parasols; in winter, fighter jets roar and rifle fire cracks overhead. Over the years, the dunes—partly situated within Sardinia's largest military training ground—have visibly shrunk. Among local residents, a rumour persists that Silvio Berlusconi stole the sand and carried it north to his scandal-ridden Bunga Bunga villa in fashionable northern Sardinia. Beginning with a grain of sand, LA DUNA pursues a larger question: who owns the land? The film brings together true stories of an expropriated farmer who threatens NATO with goat skulls; an enterprising fisherman who takes tourists to a radioactively contaminated peninsula; a tenacious 92-year-old cattle farmer who drives away an international property consortium; a seasonal waitress planning a marina as a matriarchy; a scattered Sardinian family; populist environmentalists; tonnes of sand in plastic bottles; and the ceaseless “battle for the narrative”.

In 2016, Germany recorded more potential tornados than ever before. At the same time, weather tropes flooded screens and feeds: shit storms, data floods, refugee waves. The film reads images as documents, fictions and instruments of control — where fear, manipulation and prediction begin to merge.
