Anna Friedrich’s documentary production Lichter der Straße will premiere at DOK Leipzig. Competing in the German Competition at the renowned documentary film festival, the film explores the stories of women living nomadic lives in Germany.
Through poetic texts and images, the film sketches a new feminist concept of freedom that contrasts with Germany’s ordered landscapes. Director Anna Friedrich meets a travelling journeywoman nearing the end of her traditional years on the road; an activist who has chosen to live at different caravan sites; and a former high-wire artist of Yenish heritage and her granddaughter, who are trying to preserve their lives on markets and, with them, their way of life.
The premiere takes place on 29 October 2024 at 6 pm at CineStar 2 in Leipzig. DOK Leipzig will also screen the film on 31 October at 7:30 pm in the east hall of Leipzig Central Station (admission free), on 1 November at 11 am at CineStar 4, and on 3 November at 9 pm at CineStar 5.
Director Anna Friedrich uses the conversations to examine her own longing to be on the move more closely, while also critically reflecting the settled world through these women’s eyes. In this way, the potential of nomadic life becomes visible – and so does the threat of it withering away between residence permits and garden fences. Crossing to the other side of the fence opens up new possibilities.
“Lichter der Straße” is the graduation film of Thuringian filmmaker Anna Friedrich. The production was made in collaboration between ROSENPICTURES Filmproduktion GbR, Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. The film was funded by Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and supported by the Thuringian State Chancellery.
