Since its founding in 1989, the États Généraux du Film Documentaire have been considered one of the most important forums for thought and debate on documentary film in Europe. Unlike traditional competition festivals, the focus is on collaborative reflection, in-depth discussions, and the collective viewing of international documentary works. The unique atmosphere of the village of Lussas contributes to the open, communal character of the event.
