Which films are a good fit for sonar.film?

SONAR.film is not a private hobby platform, but a curated streaming service for arthouse films.

We value artistically and aesthetically ambitious content.
Our films have often already taken part in festivals or have otherwise stood out as particularly creative.

If your film meets these criteria, there is a good chance it can be included in the programme.

How does uploading my film work?

Contact
First, send us an enquiry at info💌sonar.film with information about your film, such as festival participation, a short description, if applicable a screener link, and the full contact details of the rights holders.
Review & contract
Our curatorial team reviews your work. If everything fits, we will send you the licence agreement. Once it has been signed by both parties, we can get started.
Access to the Sonar Admin Zone
Immediately after the contract is finalised, you will receive access to the Sonar Admin Zone. There you can:
- Manage your data, such as film title, description, poster, etc.
- See at any time how often your film has been rented and what revenue you have generated.

We are happy to support you with all settings and questions. We take care of encoding, streaming, and security. Once everything is ready, we will publish your film, and it will be available on sonar.film and for embedding on your website.

How does the licence agreement work?

You enter into a licence agreement with us that clearly defines that we are allowed to stream your film.
The agreement is non-exclusive: you can publish your film elsewhere at the same time, such as in cinemas, on DVD, or on other platforms.
By default, your film is available worldwide. However, if you would like to exclude certain countries, we can activate geoblocking.
If you ever wish to withdraw your film, you can terminate the agreement with the agreed notice period

How does the payment model work?

There are no costs for you for uploading or making your film available on sonar.film. We finance ourselves through our share of the revenue from each rental.
There is a starting price and a minimum price, for example €5 starting price and €3 minimum price, gross. These are defined in the licence agreement.
On this basis, users can freely decide what price they want to pay for the 48-hour rental.
For each rental, a base amount of €1.30 net is deducted first. This covers external transaction fees, hosting, streaming, tax accounting, GEMA, and other service providers.
The remaining revenue is then distributed 70 % to you and 30 % to sonar.film. With our share, we finance, among other things, marketing measures, further development of the platform, and support for your film, so you can focus on what matters most – your creative work.

How and when do you receive your money?

You have access to the Sonar Admin Zone, where you can see live how often your film has been rented and how much revenue you have earned.
As a rule, we pay out once per financial year if your share exceeds €100.
In addition, you can request once per year a full payout of your balance, regardless of the amount. We are then obliged to transfer the outstanding amount to you within 90 days.

How long does the contract run and how can I terminate it?

Initial term: 12 months
Uploading, promoting, and maintaining a film involves work – both for you as the rights holder and for us as a platform. A minimum term of one year gives both sides planning security.
Automatic renewal: every year for another 12 months
As long as you are satisfied, your film simply remains available. This saves you time and effort because you do not have to constantly draft or extend new contracts.
Termination: in writing no later than 3 weeks before expiry
If you do not wish to renew, a short written notice three weeks before the end of the current term is sufficient. This gives you full control over your work, and allows us to stop sales and end our promotional measures in time.

What about music and GEMA?

If you use music subject to GEMA licensing, you must inform us when concluding the licence agreement. We will then pay the applicable GEMA fees and take care of everything.

Please clarify in advance all necessary rights to publish your film with us.

What exactly do you need to provide?

Film file (MP4 in HD or 4K)
Poster or film poster in DIN A aspect ratio (jpg, min. 764*1080px )
Stills (at least three, in good resolution)
Short description (tagline, logline, synopsis, crew information)

With these materials, we can present your film attractively on SONAR.film.

How does sonar.film protect your film and data?

We use token authentication, DRM systems, and hotlink protection so that your film cannot be copied without authorisation.
We treat all personal data belonging to you and the users in compliance with the GDPR and with the greatest care.
