Synopsis

A group of men fixes its gaze on the sky. High above, a flock of pigeons moves in an unreadable formation. Suddenly, individual birds drop through the air, rolling backwards with wings outstretched and tumbling down in a circular motion before returning to their normal flight path.

Piece by piece, Yalda Afsah's short film SSRC (2022) dissects this aerial choreography, revealing it as a form of animal training and gradually magnifying the sometimes almost intimate moments within this interspecies relationship. The film centres on the particular social world of the Los Angeles-based Secret Society Roller Club and the ways its members identify with—and through—the animals. It illuminates relations of interdependence and care, domestication and dominance, while probing the ambiguity embodied by a bird that flies freely yet remains bound to human will.
