Das anonyme Künstlerinnenkollektiv NEOZOON macht nun in seiner filmischen Collage LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS auf dieses Gedankengut aufmerksam: Menschen, die in ihrem Glauben Extremes tun, die die Religion als das oberste Gesetz ansehen, die ihr ganzes Heil in Gott, Jesus und dem Heiligen Geist sehen. Die einzelnen Sequenzen des Found-Footage-Bildmaterials werden so geschickt und klug zusammenmontiert, dass man die Gleichförmigkeit der Aussagen und der Ausdrucksweisen erkennen kann. So gelingt es, das Absolute des bedingungslosen Glaubens bloßzustellen.

Synopsis

This experimental film collage engages with the creation of humankind as recounted in Genesis 1:26–31. Its principal focus is the multitude of creationists on YouTube who subscribe to the doctrine that humanity stands at the uncontested pinnacle of creation.

Genesis 1:26: “Then God said: Let us make humankind in our image, in our likeness. Let them rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth and every creature that crawls upon the ground.”

For many people, this verse continues to legitimise humanity's claim to dominion over the planet. Repeated endlessly by self-appointed YouTube preachers, such articles of faith can foster a distorted worldview among their audiences. The Earth and every non-human organism living upon it are reduced to resources for human use. The film exposes both the absurdity of this hostility towards nature and the supposedly uniform image of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit produced across social media. Much of the film employs a picture-in-picture aesthetic intercut with full-frame images, bringing ancient and contemporary Christian iconographies into collision. Quotations from Genesis pulse rhythmically through the film, repeated in chorus by a YouTube community. Every image used is found footage.
